                                                              Gerund.
Definition
Structure
v  Verb এর সাথে ‘Ing’ যুক্ত হয়ে যখন একসাথে Verb  এবং Noun এর কাজ করে তখন তাকে Gerund বলে।।
যেমনঃ Walking is a good exercise.
Base form of verb + ing = gerund.
[ex: Walk + Ing=walking]
v  Uses
Gerund যেহেতু Noun  এর সমতুল্য; অতএব ইহা Noun এর কাজ সম্পন্ন করে। নিচে Gerund এর ব্যবহার দেয়া হলো-
v (a)Verb এর subject রুপেঃ
                                        =Walking is a good exercise.
                                        =Writing makes a man perfect.
v (b)Transitive verb এর object রুপেঃ
                                                   =We began writing.
                               =He likes hunting.
v © Preposition এর object রুপেঃ
                               =He is interested in playing cricket.
                               =He is short of hearing.
v (d) Incomplete verb এর complement রুপেঃ
                                =His hobby is collecting stamps.
v (e) Compound Noun এর অংশরুপেঃ
                                     =This is my reading room.
                                =This is frying pan.
Remark:
v  Gerund Infinitive উভয় form এর মধ্যে verb এর Force রয়েছে। সুতরাং এদের ব্যবহার একই। অতএব  sentence গুলোতে এ দুটি form এর যে কোনটি ব্যবহার করলে অর্থের কোন পরিবর্তন হবেনা। যেমনঃ-
§  (a) Noun infinitive: To write is better than to read.
                                   Gerund: Writing is better than reading.
                                b) Noun Infinitive: To see is to believe.
                                    Gerund: Seeing is believing. 
v  Gerund এর শেষ ঝোঁকটি Noun এর দিকে। সুতরাং gerund এর পুর্বে কোন Noun বা Pronoun ব্যবহার হলে তার possessive অর্থাৎ Rahim’s, My, our, your, his etc হয়; যেমনঃ-
Incorrect: I hope you will excuse me leaving early.
                                      Correct: I hope you will excuse my leaving early.
